From Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱerd-, *(s)ḱer- (dung, manure, filth). Cognate with Latin cerda ("dung, feces"; in compounds: mūscerda, sūcerda, etc.), Ancient Greek σκῶρ (skôr, excrememnt, feces).
