[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *(s)meh₂- (“to beckon”),[1] though de Vaan follows Schrijver reconstructing a *mon-u- derivation.[2] Compare Proto-Germanic *mundō (“hand; protection, security”), Hittite [script needed] (manii̯aḫḫ-i, “to distribute, entrust”) (the latter said to be from *mn-ieh₂- by Kloekhorst[3]).
