From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *pepelh₁-o-. Cognate with Lithuanian pelenaĩ (ashes), plė́nis (speck, fine ashes), Latvian plẽne (white ashes on coals) and Old Prussian pelanne (ashes).
