From Proto-Indo-European *bʰrews- (to swell). Related to *brusts as well as to the verb *brustijaną (to sprout). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *brъstь (bud), possibly Albanian brushtull (ivy) (< Proto-Albanian *brustula).
