Can also Ossetian (deprecated template usage) хуыцау (huycau) be a descendant? We have h as in Greek and c(ts) is not too far from t... Any cognates in other (living) Iranian languages? Bogorm 07:30, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
- Probably not. There is Avestan zaotar- to match Vedic hótar- (in both the same sense and from), but none of the Indo-Iranian languages shows semantic shift to "deity, god", only various derivatives of basic PIE "to pour, sacrifice, etc." sense. Moroever, according to one paper by Beekes, the Germanic word for "god" is not at all related to PIE *ǵʰew-, which should probably be noted. --Ivan Štambuk 10:01, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
- Well, but to-day an IP added a Persian descendant (albeit lacking proper script). Is the Ossetian word related to the Persian one? The uſer hight Bogorm converſation 10:43, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
- Seems to be fake, plus it cannot be a regular reflex in any way (from my amateurish perspective). I've removed it until someone provides sufficient counter-evidence. --Ivan Štambuk 16:47, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
- I uploaded the etymology of Ossetian хуыцау (x°ycaw) from В.И. Абаев (1970), Русско-Осетинский словарь to here. It's of Caucasian origin, not Iranian. --Vahagn Petrosyan 12:36, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
