From Old Norse Róaldr, Old Norse Hróaldr, from earlier Hróðvaldr, from Proto-Germanic *Hrōþiwaldaz, *Hrōþawaldaz, from *hrōþiz (praise, fame) + *waldaz (ruler, chieftain). Cognate with Icelandic Hróaldur, Norwegian Roald, and Old High German Hrodowald.
