From Old High German salmo, from Latin salmo. Compare Dutch zalm.

Pronunciation

Noun

Sallem m (plural Salme)

  1. (chiefly along Rhine and Moselle) salmon (fish)

Usage notes

  • The more common word in all dialects is Lahs (now widely also Lachs as in standard German). Various secondary distinctions may be made (or may formerly have been made) between Lahs and Sallem, chiefly by fishers.
