Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Albanian *balbā, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *bal-bal- (barbaric speech), of onomatopoeic origin. Cognate to Ancient Greek βαβάζω (babázō, chats, talks indistinctly), Latin balbūtiō (to stammer, stutter), Lithuanian blebénti (babble).
