From Middle High German besudeln, besodeln, besodelen, equivalent to be- +‎ Sudel (puddle; muck), from Middle Low German sudde (swamp; marsh). Akin to Middle High German sutte (puddle; mudhole), Old English ġesyd (wallowing hole).
