be- (by, near) +‎ twēonum (the two, dative plural noun), literally, "near(est) to both", i.e. "(in) between". Compare Gothic 𐍄𐍅𐌴𐌹𐌷𐌽𐌰𐌹𐌼 (tweihnaim, among, amid). Compare also Old English twēġen.
