be- (“by, near”) + twēonum (“the two”, dative plural noun), literally, "near(est) to both", i.e. "(in) between". Compare Gothic 𐍄𐍅𐌴𐌹𐌷𐌽𐌰𐌹𐌼 (tweihnaim, “among, amid”). Compare also Old English twēġen.
