From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *baxmb- (kind of noise). Cognate to Ancient Greek βόμβος (bómbos, a boom, deep hollow noise), βομβύκια (bombúkia, humming insects), Old Norse bumba (drum).
