Etymology
Found in Late Latin. Probably via Greek (compare Ancient Greek πυτίνη (putínē, “flask”) and βοῦττις (boûttis), ultimately from the imitative Proto-Indo-European *bʰeHw- (“to swell, puff”). Also see German Bütte.

Citation/quote? Per TLFi (http://www.cnrtl.fr/etymologie/bouteille) this is VL., but per RAE (http://dle.rae.es/?id=5zCKr3H) at least a diminutive is attested in LL.
