Etymology

From Latin cathēdra (possibly through a Vulgar Latin variant cathégra, attested in Pompeiian inscriptions), ultimately from Ancient Greek καθέδρα (kathédra). Compare Romansch chadregia, Lombard and Piedmontese cadrega, Ligurian and Venetian carega, Catalan cadira, Spanish cadera. Cf. also the borrowing càtidre.
