See WT:LOL and WT:LOL/E., variant of Old French creance (faith; belief), from Late Latin crēdentia (credence, promise), from Latin crēdēns, crēdere (trust, confide in, have confidence in; believe in, trust in, give credence to; believe), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱred dʰeh₁- (to place one's heart, i.e. to trust, believe), from *ḱḗr (heart).
