Etymology[edit]

A compound of m'neto (supernatural being) (from Proto-Algonquian *maneto·wa (supernatural being)) + kwe' (woman) (from Proto-Algonquian *eθkwe·wa ((young) woman)), because such people were considered to have supernatural spiritual power and wisdom.
