Catalan

Etymology

From Old Catalan (cf. also the parallel form escabell), from a variant of Lua error in Module:etymology at line 156: Old Occitan (pro) is not set as an ancestor of Catalan (ca) in Module:languages/data/2. The ancestor of Catalan is Old Catalan (roa-oca)., from Latin scabellum; the -m- is possibly due to influence from a variant form scamellum or a Vulgar Latin scamnillum.

Pronunciation

  • Lua error in Module:ca-IPA at line 1124: In respelling 'escambell', the stressed vowel 'e' is ambiguous. Please mark it with an acute, grave, or combined accent: é, è, ê, or ë.
  • Rhymes: -eʎ
