Documented at least since the 18th century; perhaps borrowed from English stingray rather than an old loanword from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Lua error in Module:parameters at line 159: Parameter 1 should be a valid language code; the value gem-sue is not valid. See WT:LOL. or (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Gothic.[1] Ultimatelly from Proto-Germanic *stinganą, whence also Old Norse stinga.
