From Proto-Germanic *hōfaz, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱoph₂ós. Germanic cognates: see Proto-Germanic *hōfaz. Non-Germanic cognates include Russian копыто (kopyto) and Sanskrit शप्ह (śapha).
