Central Franconian

Alternative forms

  • hellefe (Moselle Franconian; now also Ripuarian via standard German)

Etymology

From Old High German *helpan (attested in several conjugated forms), northern variant of helfan, from Proto-Germanic *helpaną.

Pronunciation

Verb

hellepe (third-person singular present hellep, past tense hollep, past participle jehollepe)

  1. (Ripuarian, dated in some dialects) to help
Et Sarah von bovven es e leev Mädche, it hät mer met dä schwäre Täsche jehollepe.
Sarah from upstairs is a darling girl, she helped me with those heavy bags.

Usage notes

  • The second and third persons singular of the present have a vowel change /ɛ/ → /e/, which is not reflected in spelling.
