A zero-grade, ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *ḱḗr (heart). Compare Greek καρδιά (kardiá), Welsh craidd, Armenian սիրտ (sirt), Lithuanian širdis, English heart.
