From Proto-Germanic *mahtiz, from *maganą + *-þiz, or from Proto-Indo-European *mógʰtis < *megʰ-. Compare Old Saxon maht, Old English miht, Old Frisian macht, Old High German maht, Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐌷𐍄𐍃 (mahts).
