Etymology

From Arabic مِغْرَفة (miḡrafa, scoop, ladle). A more etymological spelling would be magħrfa, which is sometimes seen, but is probably a mere misspelling (as often found with ). The form mgħarfa may have been standardised for uniformity with the plural mgħaref, which can only be spelt this way.
