From Proto-Germanic *sinkwaną, from Proto-Indo-European *sengʷ- (to sink, to drop). Compare Old English sincan, Old Frisian sinka, Old Saxon sinkan, Old High German sinkan, Gothic 𐍃𐌹𐌲𐌵𐌰𐌽 (sigqan).
