[edit]Borrowed from Italian scala, from Latin scāla, whence the inherited Romanian doublet scară (“stairs, ladder”). Also a doublet of escală and schelă. The older sense was probably taken from Greek σκάλα (skála) (17th century), itself from Italian scala.
