Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *skaiþiz, possibly from a root *skaiþ- (divide, separate), based on the notion of a split stick with a sword blade inserted; compare *skaiþaną (separate). Compare Old Frisian skethe, Old Saxon scethia, Old High German sceida, skaida, Old Norse skeið, skeiðir.
