semellar (to resemble) +‎ -ante. From Old Galician-Portuguese semellante; possibly from a Vulgar Latin *similiānte, from Late Latin similāns, similāntem, present participle of similō, from Latin similis. Compare Portuguese semelhante, Spanish semejante.
