From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek σῆψις (sêpsis, putrefaction), from σήπειν (sḗpein, to make rotten), from σήψ (sḗps, a kind of lizard, also a kind of serpent whose bite was alleged to cause putrefaction).
