Etymology

From Arabic شَجَرَة (šajara) with dissimilation of š- against the following -j- (as in some Arabic dialects).

Usage notes

  • The form siġar was originally a collective, but is now construed as a real plural. Nevertheless the form siġriet may still be used after numbers from 2 to 10. Compare the same situation in baqra and some other words.
