From Proto-Slavic *sьrxy (stem *sьršen-), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Balto-Slavic *śiršō, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₂s-. Cognate with Lithianian širšė, Latin crābrō, English hornet.
