Derived from a North Germanic language, compare Norwegian Nynorsk vorte.

Cognate with Southern Sami vaahtere, Ume Sami [Term?] (vàrʿtoo), Pite Sami [Term?] (vār̆ʜ̄tu̬ȯ), Lule Sami vártto, Kildin Sami воа̄ҏҏт (våår̥r̥t), Inari Sami [Term?] (spȧrttu) and Skolt Sami värtt.
