From Proto-Germanic *steupa- (bereft, pushed out). Akin to Old Frisian stiap-, Old High German stiof- (German stief-), Old Norse stjup- (Swedish styv-), Middle Low German stef-, Dutch stief-, Old English āstīepan (to bereave, orphan), bestīepan (to deprive of children).
