Possibly from Vulgar Latin *trabaclāre < Latin trabaculare, or alternatively ultimately from Vulgar Latin *tripaliāre, present active infinitive of *tripaliō from tripalium, or derived regressively from travagghiu. Compare Spanish trabajar, Italian travagliare, which was a French loan word (meaning the Sicilian may ultimately be a borrowing as well, likely through Old (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Norman/(deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old French travaler, traveler; compare French travailler).
