Probably from Vulgar Latin *trichea, *trichia, *tricia (braid, rope), from Ancient Greek τριχία (trikhía, rope), from θρίξ (thríx, hair). Or, from or influenced by Ancient Greek τριχα (trikha, threefold), from τρι- (tri-).
