Taos

Etymology

From *wíla- (pass, gap?) + -tho (at). Cognate with Picuris p’į̀nwéltha (Picuris Pueblo) (literally “mountain pass place” although this decomposition is now opaque).

Pronunciation

Particle

wílatho

  1. Picuris Pueblo; literally, "at the pass", referring to location of the pueblo near the west end of a pass leading to the Great Plains

References

  • Felicia Trager's translation is “Picuris Pueblo”, but Edward Curtis recorded a translation “at the pass”. Curtis also obtained a similar translation for the cognate term in the Picuris language.
