Etymology

From Old High German wahsan.

Pronunciation

Verb

wahße (third-person singular present wähs or wiehs or wähst or wiehst, past tense wohs, past participle jewahße or gewahs or gewahst)

  1. (most dialects) to grow; to become larger
Wann de Wurzele keen Plaz krijje, wähs en Planz net wegger.
When the roots find no free space, a plant won’t grow any further.

Usage notes

  • The past tense is restricted to Ripuarian and northern Moselle Franconian. Otherwise the forms wähs, wiehs; jewahße are Ripuarian, while wähst, wiehst; gewahs(t) are Moselle Franconian.
