From Proto-Slavic *verdъ, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *werdʰ-, *wordʰ-. Cognates include Proto-Germanic *wartǭ (wart), Sanskrit वर्ध (vardha, increase, augmentation) and Latvian apvirde (boil, abscess).
