Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ἄπνους (ápnous), contracted form of ἄπνοος (ápnoos) -modern άπνοος (ápnoos). By surface analysis, ά- (á-, alpha privative) +‎ -πνους (-pnous, of breath) for which see -πνοος (-pnoos), πνοή (pnoḗ) and πνέω (pnéō).
