From αβγ(ό) (avg(ó), egg) +‎ -ο- (-o-) +‎ -ειδής (-eidís, of form), a calque of Ancient Greek ᾠοειδής (ōioeidḗs). Unrelated to the Hellenistic αὐγοειδής (augoeidḗs, luminous, referring to light).
