Etymology

[edit]

Learned borrowing from Katharevousa ἀστεροσκοπ(εῖον), since 1848[1] + modern suffix -είο (-eío). See the Hellenistic ἀστεροσκόπος (asteroskópos, astronomer; astrologer).[2][3] By surface analysis, αστέρ(ας) (astér(as)) +‎ -ο- +‎ -σκοπείο (-skopeío). See, form Modern Greek αστέρι n (astéri, star) and σκοπός m (skopós, goal; guard); for Ancient Greek, ἀστήρ m (astḗr) and σκοπέω (skopéō).
