Ancient Greek[edit]
Alternative forms[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Hardly derived from θύμον (thúmon, “thyme”), in which case the "-β-" could be epenthetic between "μ" and "ρ". Persson proposed a derivation from τύφω (túphō, “to smoke”) in "-ρ-", with nasalization and deaspiration; this is most improbable, unless the word is Pre-Greek. Niedermann recalls Anatolian Θύμβριον (Thúmbrion) and on the other hand Τυμφρηστός (Tumphrēstós). Probably a Pre-Greek word, in view of the metathesized form.
