Etymology

[edit]

From кошара ("basket"), as a direct calque of the word "basketball". Likely 1940s in origin, as earlier news publications use the transcribed term "basketbal" (c.f. German Basketball), sometimes hyphenated, instead.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /kǒʃaːrka/
  • Hyphenation: ко‧шар‧ка

Noun

[edit]

ко̀ша̄рка f (Latin spelling kòšārka)

  1. (sports) basketball

Usage notes

[edit]

The term "basket", similarly to many other European languages, is an informal nickname for basketball, particularly 3-on-3 streetball games. The official FIBA 3X3 game is often referred to as "basket" by local media, due to its' association with streetball.
