From Middle Mongol *čeber (beautiful), from Proto-Mongolic *čege-ber, compare Mongolian цэвэр (cever, clean, neat, beautiful).

Cognate with Kazakh шебер (şeber, craftsman), Southern Altai чебер (čeber, neat), Tatar чибәр (çibär, beautiful), Khakas сибер (siber, cautious; neat), Uyghur چېۋەر (chëwer, craftsman; neat), Yakut чэбэр (ceber, neat), etc.
