Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Slavic *sъmuliti (to crunch; to silt, to sludge) + -ец (-ec) (compare Russian му́лить (múlitʹ, to grind, to munch)) or a variant of dialectal смоле́ц (smoléc, moth, maggot) with reduction of unaccented -о- > -у-.
