Old Armenian

Etymology

From Classical Syriac ܐܣܩܦܐ (ʾesqəp̄āʾ). Doublet of սկիհ (skih) from the same source. The reason for the alternate -ա- ~ -ի- (-a- ~ -i-) reflexes is unknown.

     Եւ արասցես աշտանակ յոսկւոյ սրբոյ․ ճախարակեայ գործեսցես զաշտանակն․ բունն եւ ստեղունքն եւ սկահքն եւ գնդակքն եւ շուշանքն անդստին ի նմանէ իցէ։

     Ew arascʻes aštanak yoskwoy srboy; čaxarakeay gorcescʻes zaštanakn; bunn ew stełunkʻn ew skahkʻn ew gndakkʻn ew šušankʻn andstin i nmanē icʻē.
