Central Kurdish

[edit]

Originally meaning "great-grandchild" and "lineage", a metathesis version of نەوەتە (newete), from earlier *نەوەچە (*neweçe), from نەوە (newe, grandchild) +‎ -چە (-çe, diminutive suffix). Compare نەوادە (newade, grandchild) of the Erdelani dialect, Northern Kurdish nevîçirrk (great-grandchild), Persian نواسه (navâse). For the phonetic shift compare ڕەتەوە (retewe, race) (from ڕەگ (reg, root) +‎ -چە (-çe), = Northern Kurdish rehçik) and Northern Kurdish bineçe and binate.
