From Proto-Malayic *ñamuk (compare Banjarese nyamuk), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ñamuk, *lamuk (compare Acehnese jamok, Buginese namok, Chamorro ñamu, Javanese lemut, and Tagalog lamok inside Western MP, and outside of Western MP, compare Fijian namu, Samoan namu).
