Ancient Greek[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Hebrew עֵלִי (ʿēlî).

Pronunciation[edit]

Proper noun[edit]

Ἠλῑ́ (Ēlī́m (indeclinable)

  1. Eli, a given name, most famously held by the high priest of the books of Samuel.

Usage notes[edit]

As is the case with many proper nouns, the LXX does not have accentuation nor breathing marks on Ηλι. The variant Ἠλί is found on the earliest manuscripts and is considered to most likely be the authentic spelling.
