Borrowed from English Bengali. Doublet of ꠛꠣꠋꠉꠣꠟꠤ (baṅgali), the native endonym from which it is distinguished.

Sylhetis refer to themselves as ꠛꠣꠋꠉꠣꠟꠤ (baṅgali), the native endonym. The English-derived ꠛꠦꠋꠉꠟꠤ (beṅgoli), in contrast, is solely used in jest to refer to westernised or anglophile individuals that are ethnically Bengali. Furthermore, this is often used to refer to those from the city of Kolkata or those that have taken up the habits of, or speak like, a Calcuttan.
