Inherited from Sanskrit मद्गुर (madgura), an extension of मद्गु (madgu, diver, loon), from Proto-Indo-European *mesg-ú-s (diver bird), from *mesg- (to plunge, to dip). Cognate with Bengali মাগুর (magur).
