Etymology[edit]

Apparently from ἀνα- (ana-) +‎ ἐρείπω (ereípō, to throw down, tear down), though some dictionaries associate it with ἁρπάζω (harpázō, to snatch away, carry off) or ἐρέπτομαι (eréptomai, to feed on).
